THE SACRAL CHAKRA – Svadhisthana your second chakra, the seed of creation and seat of emotions …
The sacral chakra is located just below your naval near the groin and behind your pubic bone and immediately above your root chakra. It’s called the sacral chakra because it corresponds to the sacrum at the bottom of the spine (which is a triangular shaped bone consisting of five segments (S1-S5) that are fused together and is located between the fifth segment of the lumbar spine (L5) and the coccyx (tailbone)).
Your second chakra governs your emotions and moods, deals with relationships and feelings of sexuality, your creativity (including the creation of children), it controls your sexual organs and reproductive system including ovaries and testes. It also controls the bladder and the kidneys.
THE ENERGY COLOUR OF THE SACRAL CHAKRA IS ORANGE and draws its energy from the orange band of the colour spectrum, it gives us the strength to cut ourselves some slack, expand our interests and enjoy life. Orange is warming, protective and stimulates creativity and our emotions, helping us to shed our inhibitions.
When you see the colour orange during a healing session this is because you are receiving healing to your sacral chakra on either a physical, mental or emotional level. So, let’s go through what this means …
A BALANCED SACRAL CHAKRA
The Sacral Chakra is often called ‘the seat of emotions’ and is responsible for producing joy, love for yourself, healthy relationships and creativity. When in balance it means your emotions are balanced, you are happy with an almost unshakeable good mood, you feel playful and naturally flirty with no guilt or shame. You are capable and confident and do not get suppressed by the power of other people.
You are generally content with your life, friendly towards others and have good relationships. You know what you want and have a plan to achieve it as you’re able to find your way in life. You are able to ask without demanding, as well as being able to graciously accept. You are concerned for others, helping them to also find their way but not to the detriment of your own needs. You are passionate, creative, optimistic and open with a healthy libido and feel sexually fulfilled. You don’t seek attention but nor do you shy away from it.
WHEN THE SACRAL CHAKRA IS BLOCKED
When your chakras are not functioning at an optimal balanced level they can weaken and become blocked. When this happens to your sacral chakra you will have a lack of creativity, have low libido with a fear or inability to enjoy intimacy, you may have dysfunctional relationships, feel shy, lost, isolated and be afraid to interact. You will be far too concerned about what others’ think and put their needs before your own, leaving you feeling lost and helpless. You will lose interest in looking after yourself.
WHEN THE SACRAL CHAKRA IS OVERACTIVE
As mentioned in previous blogs, just as chakras can become blocked, they can also become overactive which means that one chakra can completely dominate your life and make you interact and see things in an unhealthy way. If your sacral chakra becomes overactive you will be over emotional, jealous, clingy and generally be a bit of a drama queen, have cravings, be power hungry with a need to control and be manipulative, self-greedy and hedonistic and also be overly fixated on sex. Sacral chakra overactivity can mean you have strong cravings, to the point where it can lead to addictions to chocolate (oh how familiar this bit sounds!!), alcohol or drugs.
You don’t have to have all these issues but you might just recognise a couple of them and if you do, because the sacral chakra isn’t aligned, you can actually oscillate between it being blocked and overactive, one moment needing attention and the next shying away from it and just generally being moody and restless.
PHYSICAL PROBLEMS RELATING TO THE SACRAL CHAKRA
An imbalanced sacral chakra can manifest in several physical issues such as:
• Infertility/Impotence
• Hip pain and back pain
• Sexual dysfunction
• Gynaecological problems
• Prostate and urinary problems
• Irregular menstruation
• Fibroids, ovarian cysts and womb problems
• Problems with the stomach and organs in your abdomen
• Irritable Bowel
• Kidney problems, including kidney stones
• Over eating and addictions to junk food, alcohol and drugs
SACRAL CHAKRA RELATED BODY PARTS
Physically your sacral chakra is responsible for the kidneys, the bladder, the genitals and reproductive system including its organs and hormones. The energy of the sacral chakra is also responsible for the administration of the lymphatic and circulatory system and the urinary tract. It deals mainly with purification and plays an important part in the role of removing toxins from the body.
SACRAL CHAKRA RELATED ENDOCRINE GLAND –
THE OVARIES/TESTICLES
Each chakra corresponds to an endocrine gland which are responsible for the release of hormones in our body, keeping them balanced and able to control major nerve functions and so keep us nourished and healthy. Your sacral chakra corresponds to your ovaries and testes and the stimulation of the production of sexual hormones that develop pleasure, joy and other emotions.
HOW TO BALANCE THE SACRAL CHAKRA
Reiki heals and balances your chakras and can be done on either the front or the back of the client. The reiki will unblock the area and assist with not only physical problems relating to the prostate and reproductive system and organs but you will also feel the freedom of expressing your emotions without any discomfort or displeasure due to the clearing of emotional and sexual blockages.
Many people often tend to sleep for more than eight hours, usually in the foetal position, when the sacral chakra is cleared.
Other ways to help unblock and balance the sacral chakra are to meditate on the colour orange, imagine a bright orange six petalled lotus flower slowly opening within your sacral chakra. To enhance the meditation, sit cross legged on the floor, place your hands in the Dhyana Mudra (see below) and listen to music in the key of D and maybe also hum or play the ‘vam’ mantra sound (see below). Whilst meditating you could also place a sacral chakra crystal (see details of crystals below) in the palm of your hand or alternatively, place it on your lap.
In addition, essential oils which correspond to your sacral chakra can be used, these are jasmine, sandalwood and ylang ylang. You could add these to your meditation experience by putting a few drops in a diffuser and breathing in the beautiful smell whilst meditating and at the same time, making your room and home smell gorgeous too - or maybe mix with a carrier oil and gently rub the oil into your sacral chakra.
Other ways to unblock the sacral chakra are to play and have some fun and - one your partner may like – maybe include some sexual games! Reconnect with your sense of self and explore your creativity, perhaps write out your heart’s desires so that you have something to focus on in order to make them manifest. Write out some affirmations – see below for suggestions for sacral chakra affirmations – and meditate on these or simply repeat as suggested in the section below.
SACRAL CHAKRA MUDRA – The Dhyana Mudra
Mudras help to cultivate a greater sense of awareness to certain energetic fields within the subtle body so are ideal for using in meditation to help open up our chakras. The Dhyana Mudra is good for balancing the sacral chakra, it provides calming energy for meditation and is also used for deep contemplation and reflection.
Place your hands on your lap, palms facing up, left palm under and right palm resting on top of the left and the tips of the thumbs touching.
SACRAL CHAKRA MANTRA SOUND & MUSICAL NOTE
The Sacral Chakra mantra sound is VAM. This is a long V-A-A-A-A-M. The musical note is D and just listening to music in this key will vibrate the sacral chakra and can help to cleanse it.
SACRAL CHAKRA HEALING GEMSTONES
Basically, all orange gemstones are great for healing the sacral chakra, in particular try Carnelian (pictured), Orange Calcite, Vesuvianite, Crocoite, Amber or Golden Topaz. In addition, Moonstone can assist with purification.
SACRAL CHAKRA AFFIRMATIONS
As mentioned in previous blogs, an affirmation is a positive statement that can help to heal and strengthen those parts of us that need healing, they have the ability to programme your mind into believing the stated concept, because the sub-conscious doesn’t know the difference between what is real or fantasy. It has to be a conscious practice so it makes us become more aware and more in tune with our inner self.
The following Sacral Chakra affirmations can be spoken aloud or silently in your mind. Repeat the affirmative statements several times whilst feeling the associated positive emotion at the same time. The affirmations can be repeated each day on a regular basis, or anytime you are working with the sacral chakra. You can also write down the affirmations on paper and keep them with you, reading them regularly. It can also help to place the affirmations around your home in various places where you will see them on a regular basis (on the fridge, near the computer, etc). The more you see and read them, the better.
